On Saturday, October 24th, Community Shares will proudly offer the public a sampling of the finest craft-brewed ales and lagers that eastern Tennessee and the surrounding areas have to offer. They call it Brewers’ Jam (knoxvillebrewersjam.com) and this is the 13th annual celebration of Knoxville’s proud and impressive collection of home and micro brewers. At least 40 brewers will be offering up their tasty creations, so if you think you don’t like beer, maybe this year’s Jam can change your mind.
Community shares provides funding for many of TN’s most vital non-profit organizations, helping money go from donators and fund raisers to deserving causes. Here is a direct quote from their website, communitysharestn.org: “[We] believe all Tennesseans deserve a clean environment, affordable health care, good jobs, culture, art, and freedom from violence.” I’ll drink to that!
Brewer’s Jam isn’t only about sampling the finest brews around and helping out a great cause, it’s also about having an unforgettable Saturday. To help make that happen, this year’s festival is offering up a superb lineup of local musical talents. Opening up this year’s Jam is Centralia Massacre. Centralia is a Knoxville group that plays a form of folk music that transcends the normal parameters of the genre. They’ve earned a reputation as experimental, soothing yet energetic, and extraordinarily talented. If you want to check them out before the Jam, they are playing a show at Acoustic Coffeehouse in Johnson City on October 15th. Up next, from Nashville, is Bobby Bare Jr.'s Young Criminals Starvation League. Bobby’s soulful music is gutsy and moving, reminiscent of both classic rock and country. After Bobby is Cutthroat Shamrock, a ragtag group of celtic rockers that you have to hear to believe. Finishing off this year’s lineup is Brendan James Wright and the Wrongs. He makes real old-fashion Tennessee country music, with powerful instrumentals and lyricism that pays homage to America’s true country roots.
Knoxville benefits from Brewers’ Jam and its fundamental focus on bettering our world. Even the free shuttle from Papermill ave to Word’s Fair park, Green Car Shuttle Service, is 100% hybrid and biofueled. Tickets are $37 for drinkers ($40 after 10pm on 10/23), $15 for non-drinkers and $2 for kids under thirteen. You can buy them online and find more details and info at the festival’s website: knoxvillebrewersjam.com, or click ‘tickets’ for a list of ticket vendors. Online sales end at 9am on the day of the festival. No tickets will be sold at the gate this year so get online or go to a vendor, get your ticket, and go to Brewers’ Jam!
