If you didn’t know 50 Cent had a new cologne out called Power by 50 Cent, the two big cardboard ads standing in the middle of Macy’s men’s cologne section sure made it obvious. Presentation is everything, and the ad of 50 Cent shirtless left quite the impression on the couple in front of me as I walked over to the cologne stand. The lady sized up the photo as her boyfriend ironically was the one to proudly announce that 50 Cent has a new cologne. I don’t know who was happier—him or her.

The image of 50 Cent taking off a shirt to show the superhero chest the ladies have come to enjoy seeing added a nice touch. I'm actually surprised 50 Cent didn't jump on the cologne bandwagon sooner, but I guess his focus was vitamin water and music. No complaints here. 50 Cent now has a new fragrance company called Lighthouse Beauty, and Power by 50 is the first of what will probably be many fragrances. The Power by 50 bottle is a plain black one with a cologne metal stopper top that reminds me of a machine. Silver and black with a 50 Cent style coin in the middle and on the side of the box, I liked the design but the cologne was the test.

So far I have not found a men’s cologne that I like more than Diesel Only the Brave. Usher for Men, Diddy’s Unforgiveable and Jay-Z’s 9 IX were all excellent scents with Usher for Men leading the pack, but Diesel Only the Brave did it for me. And I don’t know if it’s the absurdly muscular body of 50 Cent, but for some reason, he’s one of those guys who just looks like he smells good. So I was ready for a masterpiece from the first sniff. There are very few colognes that I would travel to find, and I'm quick to visit Carson Pirie Scott or Kohl's to find the latest fragrances but Power by 50 is only available at Macy's. I was too curious about what 50 would call "Power," so I found a Macy's nearby and off I went.

50 Cent’s Power by 50 is made up of lemon leaves, black pepper, Artemisia, dark wood, coriander, nutmeg, patchouli, musk and oak musk. When I smelled it initially, I thought of three things: 1) masculine, 2) lemon sour, 3) dessert. There’s something strange but sweet about the scent, but I didn’t look at the ingredients until I got home, and I found out it’s the nutmeg that sets it apart from other men’s cologne I’ve smelled before. I’m used to the musk, which always makes a cologne smell masculine, but that lemon and nutmeg complimented this one well.

Initially I was thinking, “This is it? This smells like any other cologne.” I wasn’t impressed. It was cool, but Diesel is still better. However, there’s a little secret to this scent. I walked outside with this same cologne tester and let the air get to it. Then, I went back to my car to check out some other men’s cologne stashed away just to see if I could tell which one I liked most with my eyes closed, and I almost stopped on 50’s Power by 50 Cent. When Power by 50 Cent hits the air outside, it becomes that much more appealing. Put it this way. If somebody hugged you wearing this cologne, you’re not going to pull away. You might even find an excuse for a second hug—it has that kind of “Power.” But the power of Diesel is still winning out of this pack. However, I know 50 isn't done yet, and he's not too good at not being on top so I look forward to round two.
