At the beginning of tonight's episode of So You Think You Can Dance, judge Nigel Lythgoe updated viewers on the show's contractual relationship with contemporary dancer Billy Bell, who had to leave the competition due to illness, and hip hop dancer Brandon Dumlao, who replaced Bell at the last minute, but was eliminated by the judges on the first episode.
Fox is allowing a bend in the rules for both dancers. A spot is waiting for Bell, who attends Julliard, in the top 100 during the season 7 Las Vegas rounds. Dumlao will be allowed to audition again next year. Normally, once a contestant has made an appearance in the top 20, he or she is not eligible to try out for the show again.
Wondering why Bell was invited back at such a late audition stage but Dumlao must go through the entire audition process again? Lythgoe didn't give a concrete explanation, but when Dumlao was cut last week, the judges told him they thought he needed to grow more as a dancer. The Las Vegas rounds are notorious for stretching a dancer's skill, and they most likely feel he will benefit from the extra experience.
