Judge Nigel Lythgoe and other choreographers, including Mia Michaels, spoke time and time again about the high caliber of talent that season 6 was bringing to the SYTYCD table.
Well, in tonight's episode we saw the hairline cracks in some of that talent, and simply by luck of the draw, certain couples chose styles that exposed their weaknesses. In a way, it may have humbled the dancers, who obviously worked hard against a stacked deck. In another way, it was a little disappointing. Aside from Karen Hauer, Jakob Karr and Ashleigh Di Lello, no one is really shining yet. Hopefully, the remainder of the season produces more personality in the dancers.
In the meantime, here is some analysis of this week's performance episode.
Did the judges seem really inconsistent? They under-judged Pauline Mata and Peter Sabasino for a clumsy albeit enthusiastic quick step routine, but seemed much too harsh on Channing Cooke and Victor Smalley for a brilliant contemporary piece. Seems like the judges were trying to save quick step from its reputation as the "kiss of death" rather than critiquing Pauline and Peter's performances.
Stacey Tookey might be the next Mia Michaels. That is, unless Travis Wall starts contributing more often. It's probably wise for him to continue to choreograph infrequently to keep up viewers' rabid anticipation of his work. Tookey, though, has put together two impressive numbers (despite what the judges said, Channing and Victor were great), and seems like she'll be able to bring the consistent emotional depth to the show that Michaels took with her when she left the series.
The real passengers on the Hot Tamale train: Ashleigh Di Lello and Jakob Karr. Add Mandy Moore to the list, too. That jazz routine will be performed again on a best-of episode. Ashleigh is getting more and more talented by the minute and Jakob is insane. (Also, did anyone else notice that the piece's song "Relax" was edited to never mention "come"?)
More unexpected dance styles. African jazz was exciting and different -- something Nigel is always saying the show sets out to expose to the American public. Please SYTYCD, give up quick step and disco, and put more of these routines into the show on a regular basis. Noelle Marsh and Russell Ferguson danced it so beautifully, too. (Though I have to admit there's a part of me that wanted to see Brandon Bryant and Janette Manrara of season 5 perform it, instead.)
