Did you happen to go outside this morning? Around 9 or so? If you didn't then you missed one of the truly rare and wonderful treats in this world: Perfection.
I was taking trash out, I think. I don't even remember, because the only thing that sticks in my mind is how hard it was to come back inside. I stepped out, barefoot, to the smell of wet leaves all over my front lawn. And as I walked I felt them crinkle under my toes. And that sky? Perfectly overcast, thankyouverymuch. There was not a sound to be heard. Not a note out of place. There was even the perfect lack of warmth to the air. Not even a chill, really, just an absence of warmth. It was the temperature inside a pumpkin that is being gutted for pies. The temperature of a scarecrow's heart. Of your enthusiasm for in-laws during the holidays... not chilly, per se, but not roaring either.
If I were going to record an album of Autumn songs I would package them in apple skins and the picture on the front would be this morning. that's how perfectly distilled the moment was. Pure, uncut Fall. Organic. All natural. So clean that you could have mixed it with tinsel and still sold it as Autumn.
Totally absolutely brilliant.

In case you were wondering about when it is that boys start being boys, the Magician today answered that question: 5 1/2. He wandered into the room holding a toy between his legs, bragging somewhat graphically. And we don't have cable, so we can't blame MTV.
For comparison, girls start being moms at 2 1/2. It was a few weeks ago that the Goddess had to "nurse" her baby before putting her to bed.
So that should tell you something about the difference between boys and girls.

If you are a computer type who has been trying to figure out an app for the iPhone, here is a suggestion from the Magician: Google Jupiter. He has turned Google Earth on his grandmother's iPhone into a game, but he wearies of it and wants to zoom in on Jupiter. Or any planet, really.
So get on that.

The Romanian Food Festival, which ended today, was the most pleasantly odoriferous experience of this past year. Sadly, we didn't get to eat anything because it was cash only, cost at the gate to get in, plus more for the food, and I didn't have enough cash. Also, the "petting zoo" was a scabbed over, depressed goat and some pigs. But the cooking fires had my mouth watering before getting out of the car. I pity the cop that was stuck out front directing traffic. Next year I will be bringing a lot more cash.
