Mosquitoes can turn a beautiful water garden into a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Suddenly, your thoughts of spending warm evenings enjoying your water garden, and even the surrounding yard, are dashed.

Who can enjoy themselves as they are constantly swatting off mosquitoes? You can spray yourself with chemical ridden bug spray or take a more eco-friendly approach and adding some bladderworts to your water garden.

Bladderworts are submersed free-floating plants. They are rootless but stay on the top of the water with the aid of long, skinny stems.

They are carnivorous plants with small round bladders attached to their leaves which trap and then digest mosquitoes and other tiny water critters.

The great thing is they seem to have a hungry man size appetite. Spread out a few bladderworts and you will quickly see your mosquito population dwindle away.

Common bladderwort has yellow flowers and purple bladderworts have purplish flowers. If your local nursery doesn’t carry them, you can order them online.
