Irises from garden
June is the time to lift and divide your irises

Once June hits and the sun is shining, my first rotation in my gardens is planted and the bird feeders are full, I can finally sit back and relax a bit. The last few weeks we have spent planting, preparing new gardening areas, planting, turning the soil in preexisting garden areas, planting, transplanting small volunteers, planting, thinning herbs (again), planting, staking or stringing around plants and planting even more! We are really going to have a lot of canning to do this year!!

So once a gardener has their gardens on track for June, what are the essential gardening tasks that must still be done this month? Here are our top 8 garden tasks for June:

·         Begin fertilizing hanging baskets

·         Support (tie or cage) all tomato plants

·         Fertilize roses after the first flush of flowers appear

·         Lift (and then dry) any tulip bulbs you plan on dividing

·         Dead head early flowering plants such as azaleas and rhododendrons

·         Begin sowing next rotation of vegetables for continuous crops all season

·         Clip semi-hardwood cuttings (forsythia, azaleas, etc.) to fill in empty areas

·         Lift and divide irises to avoid overcrowding and to add color to  needed areas
