A new report made public yesterday shows the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services found that between 2007 and 2008 the Peanut Corp. sold products on 12 occasions that it knew were contaminated with salmonella. The report shows the Blakely, Ga., plant sold products even after getting a negative report from a private lab. An expanded recall followed.
The outbreak has been linked to eight deaths and has sickened more than 500 people. The expanded recall brings the total number of products to nearly 500 - including roasted and granulated peanuts along with all their products made with peanut meal, peanut butter and peanut paste.
The company's actions "can only be described as reprehensible and criminal," says Rep. Rosa DeLauro, (D-Conn.) who oversees funding for the Food and Drug Administration. She is asking the Justice Department to determine whether the case should be prosecuted.
All consumers are urged to read labels carefully and avoid any and all manufactured food with peanut butter while the investigation continues. And don’t forget that includes pet products.
