Keeping those birds fed during the cold

Our bird population has dwindled down the last couple of weeks, just like it does every year. We have many different feeders hung around the property which draw in a lot of birds: about 1/3 of which remain year-round. If you have birds that hang around through the colder months, it is critical you keep feeding them!

In colder weather, birds’ calorie requirements increase yet, their food becomes harder to find. If the birds have stayed in your area, they are depending on you and in the coldest months, it may be the only food they can locate.

Make sure you keep a variety of seeds in all the feeders the birds frequented during the warmer months. To help your birds get their extra needed calories, make sure to include some oil rich sunflower seeds as well as to add a few fresh suet blocks

Your birds will also need to have a source of fresh water. If you don’t have a pond or some other water source nearby, it is important to set out water. Since birds are drawn to running water, fountains are a great way to offer a continuous supply.Just remember that if you start to feed them, they will keep coming back and your help will increase their chance of survival.
