Maintenance is the biggest Fall landscaping job. Along with all the leaves that need to be dealt with, there are trees and shrubs, which need to be pruned and given their Fall fertilization. Trees and shrubs that have outgrown their areas or need to be moved for other reasons can be safely moved at this time. Plants (hydrangeas, azaleas, rhododendrons etc.) need to be cut back and/or shaped. Bulbs, tubular and roots can be divided opening up the opportunity to control their size and location. You can thin out and/or fill in areas with the transplants. The last of the herbs need to be processed and can be transplanted now. It is a good time to make herb vinegars so they will be ready for holiday use and gift giving. The last thing to do is to take a little time now to make it much easier on you in the Spring. After processing the garden, clean it of any debris and turn the soil. The soil is easy to work and by turning it now, you will save yourself a lot of backbreaking work later. In addition, you will have the satisfaction of starting the season with a prepared garden area.
Any clippings, leaves, branches etc. that have fallen on the ground must be removed. To prevent the spreading of disease, they should not be added to your compost or used as mulching. Bag them all up and dispose of them off your property.
