A soaker hose is a money and time saver!
Soaker hoses are an efficient watering system for gardens as the plants are normally close together. They are normally made from recycled rubber and need to be laid on a flat, level surface to get the optimum results.
Another thing to consider is its length: we have had much better luck with soaker hoses 50 feet and less than we have had with longer ones. The longer lengths seem to produce uneven water distribution while the shorter ones have never been a problem.
To use a soaker hose, you simply lay it on top of the soil, at least 1.5 inches from the plants. You can leave the hose in a straight line or snake them through your garden bed. You will need about 18 inches between the hose sections to ensure the entire bed gets watered.
After you have the hose placed where you want it, cover it lightly with mulch. This will help the soil stay cool and retain moisture. It also hides the hose, so keep the end up above the mulch.
Now you are set to do a deep watering every few days, or once a week, depending on the weather. You want the water to go at least six inches deep and preferably eight to ten inches.
Soaker hoses are a great way to cut down on your watering chores and to save water as well.
