Mistletoe
Mistletoe - does it really
bring good luck to those
who kiss under it?

While many of us have put up mistletoe this Holiday season, we seem to forget about this wonderful plant the other 11 months of the year.

There are multiple types of mistletoes, with most of the classified as hemiparasitic - which really just means, they are partial parasites. Since mistletoes are capable of photosynthesis, they’re not full parasites. Sounds a bit odd that it is believed that good luck will come to those that kiss under a parasite!

There are many different thoughts on how kissing under mistletoe started and why it is associated with good luck. One of my favorite little stories associated with the tradition is that mistletoe was use to be hung up in kitchens during the holidays and boys would then be able to kiss the girls under it. After a kiss, they had to remove a berry from the plant and when all the berries were removed, the kissing privileges ended.

Although we no longer remove the berries: we still hang mistletoe up and kiss under it, believing that good luck will follow.

Note: Mistletoe berries are poisonous to both people and animals.
