Our backyard – snow and cold temperatures!

The actual start of winter is about a week away but my yard is covered in snow! Not only that, the temperature has dropped way below freezing. If may not officially be winter yet but it couldn’t look or feel more like it.

As gardeners we have (hopefully) taken steps to winterize our plants but what should we do now that snow has fallen?

Take your house broom and gently lift gently upward from underneath, shaking the snow off your tree branches. This will hopefully keep the heavy snow load from staying on the branches long enough to cause broken and/or permanently misshapen plants. You don’t want to push down from the top to remove the snow as this could actually exaggerate any potential damage.

You should also do this to your shrubs, rhodys and azaleas etc. to protect them as well.

Also – use sand to sprinkle icy sidewalks, walkways and driveways instead of   salts (calcium or sodium chloride) as they can definitely cause problems for your plants!
