Atonement. "To see or not to see on DVD."
By: Michael "Mr. E" Esser
Nominated for 7 Academy Awards including Best Picture, 2007's Atonement is an original, tragic, love story that's worth every minute of the movie watchers time.
It's a much simpler era in England. A time when families came together in times of need. Three young cousins, one sister and two brothers, come to stay with their aunt and uncle at their estate after their mother and father begin having marital problems. In the home already are their two cousins, Cecilia, played by Keira Knightley, and Briony, played by Saoirse Ronan.
Days are filled with plays written by Briony and swimming in the pond. Robbie Turner, played by James McAvoy, is the families young house boy who has a crush on Cecilia and has decided to write her a note to tell her how he feels. But, when the wrong version of the note is read by Briony and misunderstood she instantly believes he's a sex addict. Cecilia does finally get the note and reads it herself only to falls for her crush the young Mr. Turner. Briony's feelings appear to be confirmed when she finds Robbie with her sister Cecilia all over each other in the library.
But, when two of the young cousins run away in the night everyone goes out to find them. While out, the young female cousin is raped and believing Robbie is a sex addict, Briony instantly blames him for the horrific crime against her young cousin. He's arrested and sent away with only the promise from his new love.
The twists and turns from the chain of events that follow change all of their lives forever.
James McAvoy does a great job, playing a very believable role as the wrongly accused young lover and Keira Knightley plays his beautiful love interest to perfection. The setting of this movie in the early 1900's and World War I is a perfect back drop for this tragic love story. Between the camera work and the character development Atonement very deservingly earns every award nod it has gotten.
Atonement is a TO SEE recommend to anyone skeptical that they could like a tragic love story set in Europe and definitely a recommend to any of you couples out there that want to enjoy a really good story that'll quite possibly make you seriously appreciate what you have that much more.
