A storm is forecast to develop near Bermuda early next week, and move northwest toward the coast of New England. The intensity of the storm, and exactly how close it comes to New England, are variables that will determine how large the surf will be next week.
According to the latest wave forecast models, the swell from the storm should start to arrive late Tuesday and last through Thursday. The swell, which would be originating over 1,000 miles from the coast of New England, is predicted to be in the 3 to 5 foot range. The wave period is forecast to be in the 10 to 12 second range. The longer the wave period, the more powerful the swell. As a reference, during Hurricane Bill, which made a close pass to the New England coast this past August, the wave periods were averaging 15 seconds. This created a tremendous swell, which ultimately caused local officials to close nearly all the beaches along the coast of Southern Maine.
