President Obama boastfully went to Berlin in the summer of 2008 addressing Berliners that he wasn’t just an American. He was a citizen of the world. After all, he was the Messiah. Germany should be honored that Obama should once again grace Deutschland.
Today, Germany will commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Chancellor Angela Merkel invited Obama. Obama declined the offer. Who knows why? It couldn’t be he wants to stay home with the wife and kids. He’s traveled more than most presidents in their first year. Maybe since the event is on a Monday, he didn’t want to cut into his Sunday golf game. Later, some of the West Wing boys were talking about a quick three-on-three pickup game of hoops.
This event will undoubtedly acknowledge Ronald Reagan who challenged former Soviet President, Mikhail Gorbachev, ‘to tear down this wall.’ That recognition to President Reagan will grate Obama. He couldn’t stand anyone else being revered. Gorbachev will be at this ceremony as will Lech Walesa of the Polish Solidarity movement. But Obama can’t be bothered
That’s the reason Obama isn’t going to Germany. The ceremony will honor freedom for half of Europe in 1989 and it won’t be about him.
