While goblins, witches, and assorted princesses, doctors, pirates, and even lawyers ring doorbells and ask for treats, hundreds of aspiring writers are hammering out the last details of plots, character sketches, and outlines for their next novel. It's HalloNaNoWeen and at midnight tonight over 120,000 writers world-wide will begin their new novels as part of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo).
In Seattle, that means about 2,500 writers are anxiously awaiting the stroke of midnight.
On the Eastside, many of those writers will be gathering at the local Denny's Overlake Restaurant on 148th Avenue in Bellevue to get to know each other and to compete to be the first to reach 1,000 words. Debby, the waitress who will take on the challenge of serving the fifty or so writers says, "We'll set up one long row of tables down the middle of the back room, and we'll have all the booths that surround the tables filled with writers. And, of course, it will all be separate checks."
Far from being exasperated by the thought, however, Debby is excited about having the writers come in. They will start to gather about 10:30 to eat and get to know each other. The kitchen will move a lot of food up until midnight. Then it will all go quiet as laptops and pads of paper are opened and Debby move through the quiet crowd refilling coffee cups and water glasses, careful not to drip on the computers that line the tables.
"This is the fourth year Denny's has hosted HalloNaNoWeen," Debby says. "Our biggest fear is that the group will grow so big they won't be able to fit here anymore. And to think that the first year, only one person showed up!"
If the forums are any indication, Debby will have her work cut out tonight.
