Using key information from the 2000 census and Governmental estimates of the current population of Michigan, we can start to paint a picture of a state heading in the wrong direction.

Michigan Population 2008 estimate: 10,003,422
Unemployment rate for November and December 2008 as reported by cnnmoney.com: 9.6%
This means there are at least 960,328 unemployed people here

Granted a lot of that has to do with the collapse of the American Auto Industry but that alone does not tell the whole story of what is going on in Michigan.

Let us start with the tax burden.

Each Michigan resident pays 2,381.34 dollars in taxes each year. If we use the Census estimate of 10,003,422 dollars that means Michigan rakes in 23,821,548,945.48 dollars of tax revenue each year.

Now the latest figures from Michigan show that there are currently around 52,000 people in state prisons. Now the average cost of a prison sentence in Michigan is 106,000. That means the 52 thousand prisoners are costing the state 5,512,000,000 dollars, which in effect is 23% of the tax revenue each year.

Now when we add the number of people in prison to the number of people on unemployment we come to find that over 10% of the population of this state is not contributing anything to it.
