I have to admit I'm not a true sushi aficionado. I've never left the safety of a california roll, shrimp tempura roll, even the occasional avocado or cucumber roll, but I almost always enjoy sushi restaurants with someone who knows their stuff. This past visit to Mai Sushi was no different. I met my friend, Jay, there for lunch and he's pretty hip to sushi. Our relationship with the place has been somewhat tenuous, though.
First off, there's waiter-guy. Jay and I used to work together so we've had occasion to eat at Mai Sushi quite often. We've seen the young Japanese-American girl - pretty, friendly and efficient. Ditto the mid-thirtiesish Japanese girl. But most often we've been served by waiter-guy. A regular young American dude, waiter-guy leaves something to be desired as a server. "Not a problem" is his mantra. He brings the water, "thank you" we say, "not a problem" he says. We place our order, once again it's "not a problem". It's not even fair to criticize him, really. I mean sure, he sometimes doesn't refill your water until you ask, but outside of that my problem with him is just a vague, mildly bad vibe. Bad might even be an overstatement, maybe just an "off" vibe, but there it is. I might've dismissed it months ago if Jay hadn't concurred. But he did. Now it has become "a thing". It's gotten to the point where my heart sinks just a bit when I walk in and see waiter-guy. Even sitting at the bar isn't safe. I need to find out his schedule so I can plan my visits for his days off.
Of course, the reason I endure waiter-guy again and again is because the food at Mai Sushi is good. I almost always get the 'A' lunch roll combo; one california roll, one shrimp tempura roll, miso soup and a salad for $8.50. I've had the chicken teriyaki before but wasn't thrilled, and once ordered the shrimp tempura and loved it. Jay ordered the four piece sushi lunch special and said it was an exceptional batch. But then Mai always delivers, no matter who's serving. Give Mai Sushi a try some time and it may just become your sushi, too. As long as the food is good there's "not a problem".
