Just announced! Funny many Steve Martin and famous Baldwin brother Alec Baldwin are set to co-host the 2010 Oscars in Hollywood, California. Martin joked, "I am happy to co-host the Oscars with my enemy Alec Baldwin," while Baldwin added, "I'm thrilled to be hosting the Oscars. It's the opportunity of a lifetime." [ABC, Nov. 3, 2009]
History of Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin hosting the Oscars
Hosting the Oscars is a task already familiar to the celebrity -- and contrary to his past reputation as THE JERK derived from his old Saturday Night Live days, the actor is well liked.
Steve Martin was actually so professional, smooth, and funny as a past host, he earned an Emmy Award nomination for his hosting work on the 73rd Academy Awards. [He also hosted the 75th annual Oscar awards.]
Baldwin was nominated for an Academy Award in 2003 for his supporting role in 'The Cooler', but he's never graced the Oscar stage as a host. [He did work as a presenter in 2003.]
He got the parents choice for biggest JERK in Hollywood thanks to a deriding voicemail he left for his daughter. Sired with mother Kim Basinger, the Baldwin daughter might be brainwashed by mom into hating her dad, but Alec's parenting skills leave much to be desired.
MASS APPEAL OF OSCAR HOSTS DESPITE JERKY BOY STATUS
While Steve Martin (as an actor) holds an appeal to middle America thanks to starring in roles where he plays an everyday kind of character [such as acting as an ordinary day in "Father of the Bride" and "Cheaper by the Dozen"], Alec Baldwin has a more cosmopolitan appeal.
The celebrity New Yorker and former husband of actress Kim Basinger won many friends in Hollywood thanks to early starring comedic roles in movies like "Beetlejuice" with actor Michael Keaton, but toughened up for "Pearl Harbor" (the war drama).
When are the 2010 Oscars
The awards ceremony for the Oscars will be held March 7, 2010 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. In recent years, the event has been held in February; however, Hollywood chose to move the even forward a month to allow stars the ability to travel to see the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.
Producers Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman stated, "We think the team of Steve and Alec are the perfect pair of hosts for the Oscars. Steve will bring the experience of having hosted the show in the past and Alec will be a completely fresh personality for this event." Baldwin and Martin follow in the footsteps of Hugh Jackman, who hosted a revamped Oscars show earlier this year.
