If you have a child starting college this September (or even the following September) the Princeton Review’s listing of the top party schools might be an important piece of information. While the list can’t be taken as gospel it is the result of 122,000 college students who would be aware of such things.
University of Florida, which was last year’s winner of the dubious award, dropped down a notch this year to second. Penn State University (who has made the list for 7 years) jumped up from their 2008 third place standing to become the nation’s No. 1 party school.
Hoping to do a bit of PR work, Penn State University spokeswoman Annemarie Mountz said in a press statement: “These rankings are not more than popularity contests. “It’s a badge of honor at this point. Nationwide, kids want to pump their schools in these surveys. It’s not connected to reality.” Since most parents are contributing to their children’s college expenses, I doubt they consider making the list a way to “pumped up” the college that way!
As parents of an incoming college student, the list is just one of MANY considerations that can be used to help assure your student has a successful college experience. Here is Princeton Review’s listing of the top 20 party schools:
1. Penn State University, State College, Pa.
2. University of Florida, Gainesville, Fla.
3. University of Mississippi, Oxford, Miss.
4. University of Georgia, Athens, Ga.
5. Ohio University, Athens, Ohio
6. West Virginia University, Morgantown, W.Va.
7. University of Texas, Austin, Texas
8. University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wis.
9. Florida State University, Tallahassee, Fla.
10. University of California-Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, Calif.
11. University of Colorado, Boulder, Colo.
12. University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa
13. Union College, Schenectady, N.Y.
14. Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind.
15. DePauw University, Greencastle, Ind.
16. University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tenn.
17. Sewanee: The University of the South, Sewanee, Tenn.
18. University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, N.D.
19. Tulane University, New Orleans, La.
20. Arizona State University, Tempe, Ariz.
Locally:
None of Washington State’s colleges made the list but Florida, Indiana and Tennessee all had the honor of two of their colleges being listed. One interesting note was how much more favorable Whitman College in Walla Walla, scored over University of Washington.
While the U of W did make it into the Best Western Colleges college list (there are 123), the only other three places they made the top 20 list were:
# 7 Students Dissatisfied with Financial Aid
#19 Professors Get Low Marks
# 20 Election? What Election?
Reading that, I’m glad we ruled the school out!
Whitman College did much better in their list:
#4 Everyone Plays Intramural Sports
#9 Professors Get High Marks
#11 Best Classroom Experience
#12 School Runs Like Butter
#12 Best College Theater
#15 Happiest Students
#16 Best College Radio Station
#19 Least Religious Students
#19 Best College Library
#20 Best Quality of Life
