I saw Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince this morning in a theater filled with adults, teens and children: some very young children. When I saw how young a few of them were, I was concerned before the movie even started. As it turned out, I was right to be concerned. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is not a movie for pre-schoolers!

The sixth installment of the Rowling wizard saga has some dark moments but it also has some appealing scenes filled with adolescence warmth and sweetness.

The friendship between the three main characters is strengthened in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince as well as the one between Dumbledore and Harry. The interplay of the love lives between Ron/Hermione and Harry/Ginny is handled just as awkwardly as real teenage relationships are: a nice change from the Twilight fiction.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has some fun comic scenes: your kiddos will enjoy Ron after he accidently eats a love potion meant for Harry. Young fans will also enjoy the fact that Quidditch is back and Fred and George’s Weasley’s joke shop is pure fun.

Four Scenes kids may find scary or upsetting ~

1. Death Eaters – need I say more?

2. Lake in the cave where Dumbledore has gone with Harry

3.  The fire at the Weasley’s house and the chase that follows

4. The ending, (it’s toned down) even though they know what is coming, it can be sad

As a parent, you will know your child best but my feeling would be that if a child is old enough to read and enjoy the Harry Potter series, then they definitely will enjoy the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince movie. One 12 year old had not read the book and with a quick briefing in the car on the way to the theater, thoroughly enjoyed the film.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is showing at selected Imax theaters starting on July 28. This would be an perfect movie to see in this form!  Locally, the Seattle Pacific Centers Imax Theater will be showing the movie and viewers can watch the movie on a screen sixty feet high and 80 feet wide, with 12,000 watts of stereo sound! How cool would that be?
