The Summer Food Service Program, also called the Summer Sack Lunch, has begun throughout Seattle. The program feeds children in need a healthy breakfast and lunch from late June through late August. Last year, the Seattle program served lunches (and snacks) for up to 5,641 children per day and a total of 242,740 breakfasts!
The program is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and was established in 1968 to help assure children received nutritional meals during the summer months. Seattle began operating their Summer Food Service Program in the early 1970’s.
Seattle offers over 100 sites with the majority of them being “open” programs where any child up to age 18 can get a meal. The other sites are “enrolled” programs which offer food to children who have been enrolled the summer programs being held at those sites.
