With swine flu a worldwide concern, it is critical that everyone understand the danger involved and what we need to do to lower our own risk. But what does it take to get the word out?
Since we are still out of the country, I am on high alert with my biggest worry being we won’t be unable to fly back. While that seems unlikely, I am keenly aware that we are in more group situations than usual and that we are 100% responsible for keeping ourselves as germ free as possible. Sadly, this swine flu outbreak has brought out all of my Monk type personality quarks!
Thing is, I am not only obsessed with my family keeping away from germs but with watching how others don’t seem to be taking ANY steps to avoid and/or spread germs! Which I find really odd with all the information the British are putting out through the TV, newspapers, radio and flyers which are sent to every home.
For example: I picked up four British newspapers and each one of them contains a full page swine flu informational page. They show a man sneezing with his germs flying out in every direction. The text is kept short, explaining that when you cough or sneeze, the germs get out fast and stay for hours. They state the only way to catch the germs is to use a tissue which must then be trashed and followed up with a soap and water hand washing.. The page lists the swine flu information phone number and website along with the slogan ~ Catch it. Bin it. Kill it. A catchy way to address one angle of spreading germs.
And yet, when we were riding the tubes yesterday I saw three different people sneeze and only one attempted to “catch it” into a tissues. The other two just put their hands up in front of their faces when they sneezed. The worse part was that they ALL touched not only the poles inside the tube but, the stairway rails in the stations: spreading their germs even more!
So, if a mass effort to do just one simple step is ignored I can’t help wonder just what it will take for people to take responsibility to protect themselves? WHO has stated that countries can’t take Mexico’s statement that the swine flu there has decreased there as permission to become complacent in the overall efforts to combat swine flu. There have been two cases of person to person infection in the UK and more cases are reported everyday worldwide.
It has been stressed that the outbreak may lay low during the warmer months and then come back stronger in the colder ones. So doesn’t it make sense to not only be diligent concerning germs now but, to teach our families to be that way all the time? The trick is to keep the balance of alerting them of the danger but doing so in a way that doesn’t frighten them.
What if you have to travel during this swine flu outbreak?
