We saw the Disney-Pixar new film Up today and we all thought it was great: defiantly a family film worth seeing. Be warned though, Up does earn its PG rating for some sadness and melancholy. And yes, you may actually shed a tear or two.
In Up Carl, a 78-year-old balloon salesman loses his wife and retreats into self-enforced exile. When he is about to lose his home, the very grumpy widower decides to take off alone on an adventure to South America (which the movie will make clear why) by sailing his home through the air via thousands of helium-filled balloons
Only he isn’t alone, as he has unknowingly taken along Russell: an energetic 8-year-old Wilderness Explorer. Of course the duo encounters an assortment of unexpected developments and unusual characters, (including talking dogs) on their adventure. While Up does have some jokes and reference only adults will get, there is plenty of laughs, silliness and action to keep the kids interested.
We viewed Up in 3D but of all the 3D movies I have watched, this one benefitted the least from it. Most of the 3-D effects are very subtle and my suggestion would be to take the family to see Up even if your local theater isn’t showing it in 3D. It really is worth seeing and since it is only 89 minutes long, one that kids and Grandma can easily sit through.
