Star Trek is drawing in the crowds, already bringing in $76,500,000 in box office sales, but is it a movie to take your kids to see? After watching the movie I can say that Star Trek is full of excitement, adventure and yes, is popcorn-worthy fun.
But, it is also filled with numerous instances of violence including blasting with guns and lasers, a chasing ice beast, hand-to-hand fighting and individuals brutally sucked into space. Probably the worst case (for me anyhow) is when Captain Pike gets a nerve-attacking Centurion slug dropped into his mouth. Most younger elementary age children (and pre-schoolers) would find the graphic fighting and overall destruction scenes too intense.
Now tweens and teenagers on the other hand, will see it more as thrilling action and do fine. The film has a lot of cute, younger stars which will add to the appeal of that age as well. As far as sex and nudity there are a few passionate kisses (with Spock by the way) and a scene where you see a green cadet’s underwear and then there are a few suggestive innuendos mentioned at a bar – nothing explicit at all.
My suggestion is if you were a fan of the original Star Trek television series, like the character Spock, enjoy action and/or sci-fi movies then go and see the new Star Trek movie: just leave the younger kids at home.
