So it’s official, the Obama’s have a new member of the family: Bo Obama. The 6-month-old pup is a Portuguese Water Dog and a gift from Senator Ted Kennedy.
We all knew it was coming, after all the President had promised Malia and Sasha that they would have their new dog in April. Now we know Bracak Obama is a man of his word. While we have all waited eagerly to see the new first dog, animal shelters and the Humane Society have also eagerly awaited, for a totally different reason.
The Humane Society is concerned that since the Obama’s have chosen a Portuguese Water Dog, puppy mills across the nation will start cranking out Portuguese water dogs in huge numbers. They have seen it happen in the past whenever a specific breed gets a lot of publicity only to have many of them later abandoned and/or dumped at local animal shelters.
Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Human Society, stated, "We see faddism when it comes to pet-keeping in the movies, and we may see that scenario play out in the case with the First Family's selection of a Portuguese Water Dog. "There are reputable breeders of these dogs, yet sadly we expect disreputable puppy mill operators to start producing them as well, intent on cashing in on the heightened awareness of this breed."
After Paris Hilton (and others) started toting Chihuahuas around like fashion accessories the tiny dogs were in high demand. The same thing happen after the release of 101 Dalmatians, suddenly the demand for Dalmatians skyrocketed. But, sadly, it wasn’t long before high numbers of both breeds were found in local animal shelters everywhere.
While the Portuguese Water Dog is adorable, let’s hope the rest of the nation is satisfied watching the Obama’s with theirs and not fell a need to go and get one of their own.
