I love Winnie the Pooh in fact I decorated my oldest child’s nursery in Pooh. All of my kids had their own favorite Winnie the Pooh character, stories and then later, movies. Most kids enjoy Winnie the Pooh so it makes sense to celebrate Winnie the Pooh Day on January 18. Author A.A. Milne's was born on January 18th in 1882 and would have been proud to know that in 2006, Winnie the Pooh was awarded his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!
It is always fun to host a Winnie the Pooh day party. Invite over a few friends (make simple bear shaped invitations the kids can color) and address them to the child plus their Winnie the Pooh stuffed animals. If they don’t have one, any bear will do as Pooh and his friends are always looking for new friends!
Set out a big blanket on the floor in front of the TV and watch a favorite Winnie the Pooh movie or read the kids from a Winnie the Pooh book.
Serve a tea (or warm cider) with honey sticks (pick some up at the store or Pikes Place sells multiple flavors for super cheap) for the kids to mix in.
Bring out open faced sandwiches that have been cut into bear shapes with a cookie cutter. You can top the bread with cheese cut in the same design (easies done after the cheese is on the bread. Also spread some of the bear sandwiches with peanut (or almond butter) and drizzle with honey. You can add raisins eyes and a nose if you want.
Other snack ideas – teddy bears grams, crackers, fresh kid sized vegetables from rabbit’s garden and Piglet’s pigs in a blanket.
You can keep it as simple as snacks and a movie or include games: pin the tail on Eeyore, guess the number of teddy grahams in the honey pot (paint a coffee can and write HUNNY on it) or a honey pot hunt, where you hide cleaned baby food jars filled with different treats throughout the house. We’ve even played Tigger balloon pop where the kids (divide in teams) have to bounce to the balloon, pop it by sitting on it and bounce back.
For other ideas, I found some great websites filled with fun Winnie the Pooh activities for the fans in your house – just click on the website’s name to go to the site.
Playhouse Disney is always a good place to find games and fun involving any of their TV shows. The link will take you right to the Winnie the Pooh area where you can then choose to head over to games, music, stories or activities. Under activities there is Rabbit’s garden patch where kids plant and water a garden. Take one type of seed and instead of making a straight rows form a design or the child’s initial and when the seeds are watered, the design will appear for some reason this is great fun for toddlers!
Over at Just Pooh your child can send a free E card (36 designs), play games, watch video clips, print some coloring pages and even try some Winnie the pooh inspired recipes!
My favorite Winnie the Pooh quote: If you live to be 100, I hope I live to be 100 minus 1 day, so I never have to live without you.
