A catastrophic event is coming. When it does, the world as we know it will be gone. In its place will be chaos, death, confusion, fear, and destruction.
It has been foretold for centuries and yet we did not believe it would ever happen. Prophecy said that we would have signs of the coming of this event and yet we paid no heed. We refused to prepare for what we knew we were heading for and now we face the horror of that indifference.
It sounds a lot like the Hollywood movie 2012 that is to be released this Friday. The movie depicts a rather extreme version of what some believe will happen on December 21, 2012 according to the Mayan calendar which reaches its end on that date.
What may be one of the most unfortunate of fortunes is that while 2012 is just a movie, the catastrophic event referred to in the first couple of paragraphs is a real event that is set to occur at any time.
Matthew 24 reveals that Christ will be returning but no one knows when that will be. According to Peter, one of the Apostles closest to Jesus, in II Peter 3:1-18, He will come like a thief in the night. You do not know when it will happen but we must be prepared for it. However, he also says that we are to look forward to it with joy and not fear.
One thing is certain, when Christ comes, it will not be on December 21, 2012. If it has already been predicted, it will fall flat. Many have already tried and failed to name the date of Christ’s return. Obviously, all were wrong.
One thing is certain: when it happens, it is going to be horrific for those left behind. Think of all of the Christians that will be driving vehicles; not just cars but buses, planes, trains, boats, etc. The chaos from that one vein alone is astronomical.
For most Christians, it is not the return of Christ that they fear; it is the fate of those that remain. The Bible is quite clear that for those left behind the future is bleak. It is one of the reasons Christians speak so strongly about their relationship with Christ and sometimes come off so strongly.
If we reach December 21, 2012 before the return of Christ we can be certain of three things:
1- The world as we know it will not end on that day.
2- The world as we know it will end soon.
3- The choice is yours how your future will end up.
In each of us there is a longing to know about our future. It is put there by the One who knew us before we were cells dividing in our mother’s womb. He longs for a relationship with us where He can show us who we are and why we are here.
If we choose life with Him, we choose life everlasting. It is freedom. It is rich in joy and grace. It is real life not something we try to force it to be. The key, however, is choice. We must choose to take the free gift that is being offered. Then, the future only holds great things.
