Seattle’s official history doesn’t include Magnolia Hill among its seven hills, but if you want an unofficial climb and scenic tour of this neighborhood, begin at the corner of Thorndyke Ave. W. and W. Armour and walk straight uphill, passing on your left, Bay View Playground, and on up until you reach 28th Ave. W., the summit. Just before you reach 28th Ave., you can turn around and survey this westernmost part of the city, taking in the rail yard and noting the Space Needle and the port in the distance. On 28th Ave., you can walk by the old Magnolia School, which if the wind is howling and you are in the right frame of mind, recalls Jane Eyre’s Lowood. It once housed both a public school and a charter school but has since been boarded up and sits unoccupied in front of Temporary Fire Station #41. If you continue down W. Armour and into the heart of Magnolia Village, you will run into West Magnolia Playground, a large expanse that includes basketball and tennis courts. This lovely park sits next to the Magnolia Community Center, a popular gathering spot for the locals and the site of the neighborhood farmers market. If you cross the park, you will wind up on 34th Ave. W., which houses, among other places, the Magnolia branch of the Seattle Public Library (it is easy to miss, nestled under trees and designed to blend into the surrounding natural environment). If you continue west on 34th Ave., until you reach W. McGraw St., you will find yourself in the center of the shopping district. Here you can find restaurants, a bookstore, hardware stores, and of course, coffee shops. You can give yourself permission to take a break at this point.
