The company opens an initiative to help develop properties as well as distribute them.

Via ANN: Funimation Entertainment, the North American distributor and liscensor of popular titles like Dragonball, and Fullmetal Alchemist, announced on Monday that it will begin co-producing anime titles based on "major intellectual properties". Several other notable distributors, including Manga Entertainment and ADV films, have been involved in similar deals in the past.

So what does this mean for the average anime fan? Well, potentially it means that we could soon start seeing American series get anime adaptations... (Buffy or Firefly, please!) It could also mean that popular English-language manga such as Megatokyo or those authored by the winners of Tokyopop's "Rising Stars of Manga" contests could potentially be adapted.

So, readers, what do you think? Are you excited by this development or not?
