Everyone begins skateboarding at a different time, for different reasons, but the reasons we keep skateboarding can be largely the same. With this concept in mind, this series was born aimed to explore skateboarders beginnings.
"I was a grom at age 56. Started skateboarding then. I am an active skateboarder at age 63. I am old school, but I admire the work of the new school skateboarders... just found out as I was beginning that my old ankles were probably limited to a less stressful style... so I ride, glide and carve thru the hills and the concrete waves...there is a quiet spirit of independence, and of respect for each other that binds them (skateboarders) together," Oli Cooper, glidenhi on SkatersCafe.
Glidenhi begun a thread on SkatersCafe in 2007, Old School Kids, and even in light of its truly inspirational beginnings, perhaps not even Cooper could predict the extent of the results. Not only has it become a sort of anthology of skateboarding, it is a window into glidenhi's life and skateboard style, and those who have been inspired by it all.
"Some of these pics (and in some cases, videos) are historical... all are inspiring... they reflect something of who you are... the spirit of skateboarding... by which we are all bound together in friendship," glidenhi begins the thread. His intrinsic skateboarding motivation was clear to all who replied to the post, and there are now 20 pages of pictures, video and more. Going through it all a skateboarders' feet itch to roll and the true spirit of skateboarding is captured, so even non-skateboarders can see the history, culture and devotion to our craft. The slideshow reflects some personal favorites, but take some time for the full dose and check out the thread, Old School Kids, and contribute to the legacy with your own photos, videos and comments, like mazonemayu's photo above described as "some friends over at the park."
