When we were little girls we wanted to be princesses, now that we’re grown we want to be a naughty nurse or a witch with a v neckline that requires a special bra, or perhaps double-sided tape. What happened to us that we went from an innocent belief in what is essentially romance (prince’s are always romantic) to a blatant sexuality?
Did we simply grow up? Did life’s charms work its wiles on us until we succumbed to a sexuality that leans more toward slut than woman? Why, when we dress up, do we want to look sexy?
There’s the obvious answer of course—to impress the opposite (and in some cases not so opposite) sex. But there’s more hiding under that particular bed than you’d think. Women want to feel sexy for themselves as well. Because being sexy equals confidence.
But why Halloween? We don’t dress like this for Christmas, and we certainly look respectable for Easter. So why Halloween?
Halloween allows us to reach a side of our selves that we rarely tap into. We can be whoever we want to be—and that’s a pretty heady concept. Our creativity and innovative side comes to the forefront and we can dress any way we want without jaws dropping.
But then, of course, there’s the good kind of jaw dropping. Every little girl wants her prince. As we grow up we come to want more than a fairy tale. We want real life, even in all its complexity. And in our society, being attractive (perhaps even slutty?) is the way to get that life.
Is this a bad thing?
No. Dressing how you want to dress isn’t a bad thing at all. I’m certainly not suggesting that you dress down so that a man will notice your personality more than your body. Our world just doesn’t work that way in any case. No matter what people may say about personality being more important than looks, in most cases you don’t notice a person’s personality until after you’ve noticed their looks. And your look says a lot.
But remember, ladies, snagging that prince requires more than an amazing costume. Be true to yourself while playing with your identity role. Maybe even incorporate that fun-loving Halloween spirit into your everyday life come November.
Have fun this Halloween!
