The Puu Kalena trail goes along the spine of the Waianae range from the Kolekole pass to the summit of Puu Kalena, Oahu's second highest peak. Parts of the ridge are ridiculously narrow, about two feet wide, with near-vertical cliffs on both sides. This is not a trail for people  who have a fear of heights! Because the trailhead is on military land, you can only do this hike with a hiking club such as the Hawaiian Trail and Mountain Club.

The video above documents a hike on this trail by the Hawaiian Trail and Mountain Club back in the mid-90's. Check out the camera work on the narrowest section of the ridge. People said I was crazy to be filming like that! I won't say more about this trail here because the video says it all. This is an excerpt from my old public access TV show "Let's Go  Hiking!" DVDs will be available for sale soon.

At the end of the video the narrrator, a guide from the club, talks about problems with trail access, such as with the Wiliwilnui Trail. He also talks about the Na Ala Hele state trail system, which has eased some of these problems. Check back in the coming weeks for articles on Na Ala Hele and the trail access issue.
