Many people start an exercise program with enthusiasm and high hopes of attaining their fitness goals. As time goes by, that initial excitement can turn into frustration, and those initial goals can seem miles away.
When you feel like giving up, it is important to reevaluate your situation. Why did you begin working out in the first place? What were your goals and how might they have changed? What has changed in your life recently that may be affecting your desire to continue your workout plan?
Here are a few ideas to help you get motivated and back on track.
Surround yourself with people that share the same goals and interests. Sometimes, when you decide to make a big change in your life, the people around you may get jealous of your progress and the positive changes they see happening in you. Find people through meetup groups or fitness classes in your area. Then you can support each other while making new friends. The need for supportive and encouraging friends cannot be underestimated.
Positive self talk is the art of speaking to yourself positively. For example, if you decide to skip out on the gym and then inwardly scold yourself with thoughts such as, “I’m a failure,” or “I’ll never be able to reach my goals”, you are utilizing negative self talk. Instead, immediately replace those negative thoughts with positive ones. Create notes with positive things to say about yourself and place them around your home, car or office where you will be able to see them, and say them.
Create a positive atmosphere through music, reading material and entertainment. Listen to songs that encourage you and make you smile. Watch success stories on TV or read about them online. Read books that will inspire and empower you.
Seek out the help of professionals. Be it a personal trainer, nutritionist or fitness coach, there are many educated people out there who would love nothing more than to be the guide on your journey to better health. Many libraries have local magazines that focus on healthy living. Search through them and you may just find something new to enjoy!
