Nothing draws my ire more than a person who claims to be psychic. I don't know the words to describe the level of arrogance it takes to claim that you can singlehandedly see the future or speak to those who are dead. Now it may seem contradictory that I believe in ghosts and not psychics, however believing in an afterlife and believing in someone having superpowers are two entirely different things. Psychics fall into two different categories, those who claim to see into the future, and those who claim to speak to ghosts, the second group has started to call themselves "mediums" in an attempt to look a little less crazy, but they're still nuts.
Group one are the wackos who claim to see the future. I'm not quite sure what traumatic event or cocktail of hallucinogens one has to encounter to make themselves believe they can see into the future, but it's gotta be something good. Everyones favorite Jamaican fraud falls into this category, Miss Cleo. As some of you may remember in the mid-late 1990's our televisions were plagued with infomercials for a homely black woman with a horridly forced Caribbean accent and dread-locks, yeah, that was Miss Cleo. Miss Cleo was actually a failed actress from LA named Youree Dell Harris, uh yeah, LA, Jamaica, same thing right? Harris made a small fortune off of her "psychic" powers by gouging her customers and making it up as she went along. The shocking thing is that even after being exposed as a fraud, liar, and overall horrible human being, she's still pretending to be psychic! She can cleanse your house, or give you a private terot reading, starting at $200.
Sylvia Brown is a switch hitter on a long list of people who belong in a straight-jacket but are instead living in mansions on the dime of the gullible. This bleach blonde windbag has made millions claiming not only to see into the future, but also claiming to speak to ghosts. She's a regular on Larry King and Montel, which should be an instant flashing red light when gauging someones credibility, and has written several books. Not only is she a psychic fraud, she's a convict. She was arrested for securities fraud and grand larceny in 1992, but this isn't her only dealings with the police. She often touts that she works with the FBI, but fails to mention that in the 35 cases she's "consulted" on, her details were either too general, or of no use at all. Least of all her short-comings is the fact that she told a couple on Montel that their missing son was dead, when in fact he was found alive a short time later. To my knowledge she's never even offered an explanation for her wild inaccuracy, instead focusing on the vague and half-true predictions she's made in the past.
We move across the pond for our next fraud and find Derek Acorah. Former host of the show "Most Haunted", Acorah has been proved to be a fraud on more than one occasion, my personal favorite happened when he was possessed by someone named "Kreed Kafer". Kreed Kafer never existed, and Acorah was never possessed by him. The character of Kafer was made up by Parapsychologist Ciaran O'Keefe. He created this character and his background, then told Acorah about them, who claimed to be possessed by this spirit and presented what O'Keefe had told him as truth. The thing that makes this my favorite is that the name, Kreed Kafer, is actually an anagram of Derek Faker. Despite his obvious lack of psychic powers, and as a golden example of his greed, Acorah will attempt to contact the spirit of former singer and King of Pop, Micheal Jackson.
Now, I'm not saying it's impossible to be more attuned to things that are going on around you. One medium has caught my eye as being the closest thing to plausible thus far, Chip Coffey is a Western New York native hailing from Elmira. He's been featured many times on the show Paranormal State and unlike others, he doesn't claim to see spirits. He feels things, and sometimes hears voices, it is for that reason that I find him believable. I too have been known to feel things while out on investigations, but I do not claim to be psychic, simply more aware than most people are.
