A Marine Lance Cpl. who was found hanged outside his home near Camp Pendleton was identified today as Joseph L. Favela, 20, a field artillery cannoneer with 1st Battalion, 11th Marines.

Authorities say that Favela’s wife found her husband hanging from a porch rafter at their home on Monday night, just southeast of the base. Emergency medical personnel were called to the scene but were unable to revive him.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office determined Favela died of asphyxiation by hanging, Marine officials said. The death is being treated as a suicide.

Favela, a Robstown, Texas, native, enlisted March 20, 2008. He was assigned to 1/11’s Charlie Company since last year, but had not deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, according to the Marine Corps.
