An American military base near the Black Sea port of Constanta will become a permanent facility in the spring, according to a U.S. Army official in Romania.
Lt. Col. Daniel Herrigstad says the U.S. government invested $48 million to modernize the base, which will jointly use the base with Romanian forces.
The base would initially host up to 1,700 U.S. and Romanian air, sea and ground troops, Herrigstad, chief of the base's press office, said yesterday.
It has taken more than two years and 1,200 construction workers to design and build the base to U.S. standards, Herrigstad said.
