Attorney General Eric Holder announced this month that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other suspects in the attacks of the World Trade Center will be tried in New York City just blocks from where the World Trade Center towers were destroyed. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed will be in New York City for the world to see. He has portrayed himself as Al Qaeda's most ambitious planner in a confession to a U.S. military tribunal that said he planned and supported 31 terrorist attacks, topped by September 11, that killed thousands of innocent victims. See the confession here. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in his own words said "I was responsible for the 9/11 operation from A to Z".
As New York City gears up for what is being considered the trial of the century, several groups are already planning protests against bringing the self-proclaimed mastermind of the September 11 attacks to trial in a U.S. civilian court. The 9/11 Never Forget Coalition said it will hold a rally on December 5 at a park adjacent to the Manhattan federal courthouse where Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four others will be tried just blocks from Ground Zero.
Debra Burlingame, co-founder of the group, said the trial gives Mohammed the opportunity to wage "jihad in the courtroom". The group supports trying the men before a military tribunal. The decision has divided the families of the victims. Some say the trial is an opportunity to face the suspects of the 9/11 attacks and help bring closure while others say the men should be treated like war criminals.
Extensive security efforts for the upcoming trial are being planned by the New York City Police Department and other Federal Law Enforcement agencies.
