The New Hanover County High Schools' annual sidewalk chalk competition will be held on Saturday, November 14th at Mayfaire Town Center. Art students from Ashley, Laney, New Hanover, and Hoggard High Schools make up the teams that will compete this year. The contest will take place from 9:00 to 11:00 am.
This year will mark the 16th year that the fun and festive competition will take place. In past years, the location for the contest has been in front of the Customs building, adjacent to Riverfront Park in downtown Wilmington. This year's new location is Main Street and Innovation Street, near Pottery Barn and Eddie Bower, at Mayfaire Town Center. Each high school will compete as a team to create one sidewalk chalk masterpiece, with both a theme and a title. The artwork will then be judged by an appointed panel of judges. An awards ceremony will take place directly afterward at the Regal Cinemas Mayfaire Stadium 16 movie theater, whereupon a coveted plaque will be awarded to the winning team. This plaque will then be displayed at the team's school for the next year.
The public is invited and encouraged to attend, and to observe the creation of original sidewalk art by each team. Several students from area middle schools will also be present, and creating smaller scale pieces.
