The San Jose Sharks used a shootout to beat the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 in front of a sell out crowd in San Jose. The shootout went six rounds before Ryan Clowe scored the decisive goal.

Patrick Marleau scored his 10th goal of the year to tie the game in the second period. Evgeny Nabokov made 29 saves in net.

“They are a very good team, very tough team to play against,” Coach Todd McLellan said. “They do a lot of things well. We had to find our game quickly and Nabby gave us a chance to work our way into the game. And then at the end of the night he shut the door. The credit goes to him and the credit goes to our players for reviving themselves after the poor start.”

For the Kings it was Alexander Frolov notching his 4th goal and Jonathan Quick making 29 saves.

In the shootout, Michael Handzus scored on the Kings first shot, but Nabokov stoned them the rest of the way.

For San Jose, Dany Heatley had the shootout saving goal in the third round to keep the game alive until Clowe could get the game winner. Nabokov did need to make one more save to ice the victory as the Sharks had shot first in the shootout.

The Kings opened up the game on the attack. With the help of an early power play the Kings out shot the Sharks 6-1 in the first four minutes of action. The Kings would hold a 12-3 shot advantage through the first 13 minutes of the game. The Kings would only get one more shot the rest of the period but still out shot the Sharks 13-5 in the first period.

“It was a battle,” McLellan said. “Obviously the start wasn’t what we wanted. We were very unhappy with that in the first period. But we responded in the second.”

Frolov got the scoring going with some old fashioned hard work. Coming from behind the net Frolov fought off Dan Boyle to wrap the puck all the way around the net to shoot to the wide side of Nabokov. The puck went off the stick of Marc-Edouard Vlassic and into the net.

Marleau tied the game at 14:32. As Marleau skated into the offensive zone he launched an uncontested rocket shot from just above the left face off circle that beat Quick just below his glove.

The Sharks certainly carried the action in the second period, especially after the Kings goal. San Jose out shot Los Angeles 14-7 to even the shots at 19 a piece through two periods.

“It was a very even game,” Kings coach Terry Murray said. “We played very well in the first period. I thought we had an edge in the first. They came back with a strong second and did the same to us as we did in the first. The third I thought both teams had some opportunities.”

The third period played out pretty evenly. Both teams has a couple of opportunities, but each time there was a scoring chance, the opposing goaltender would step up with a play.

The Sharks return to the ice on Friday night when they host Colorado.
