Dan Jacobson is the Legislative Director of Environment California, a grassroots activist organization that, according to its Mission Statement, "focuses exclusively on protecting California's air, water and open spaces." Dan also happens to have written a foreword to the new edition of California the Beautiful which was recently published by New York's Welcome Books. (Full disclosure, I was the editor of the book).
A happy marriage was formed with Environment California by Welcome's President and Publisher, Lena Tabori, because the book features 80 stunning photographs of the natural areas of the Golden State by the legendary photographer, Galen Rowell. Known as "the new Ansel Adams", Rowell died in a plane crash with his wife, Barbara, in 2002, shortly after the first edition of California the Beautiful appeared.
An accomplished mountaineer, Rowell could reach heights that often gave him a distinct angle on his subjects. Many of the photographs in California the Beautiful captured the unique beauty of California's state parks.
When asked if he would write a foreword, Dan Jacobson said "I'd love to. We already have a campaign by that name to save California's state parks which are being threatened by budget cuts"
From Dan's point of view, "Proof of California's beauty was displayed through images found in this new book, California the Beautiful, by renowned photographer, Galen Rowell. This book illustrates the majesty of many of California's treasured parks."
Dan found himself going on a modest book tour and giving away copies to legislators. All in defense of the state parks. "Our parks are our santuaries", said Glynnis Hokenson, local campaign director for Environment California. "These areas were established as parks because they are beautiful and deserve protection. Right now, they are on the chopping block and it is our responsibility to protect them. Closing state parks will hurt California's citizens, environment and economy." As Dan says, "This book is my argument. All I have to do to get the message out is show a legislator the photographs in this book."
Galen Rowell, an ardent environmentalist, would have been pleased
