The nights are getting cooler. The pool is closed. It's time to clean up and get organized after a summer of fun.
Here are some things to start on before fall gets too far along.
Photos - Print, publish, and put them away. You took a ton of pictures over the summer. Don't let them become a big overwhelming gigabyte that gets lost on your computer. Upload your photos to an online service and print them so you can enjoy them. If you're not a printer, at least publish them online so you have a back-up copy. Flickr and Picasa are just 2 free sites for this. (Posting on facebook is not enough as these are low resolution copies only.) After printing, put the photos into albums or at least into boxes so you can view them or at least gather them all in one spot.
Get back to the garden. The garden party isn't over until the bulbs are planted and the tools are put away. Sweep up. Organize containers. Store your seeds and label them so you'll be able to start again in spring.
Closet exchange - Your sleeveless shirts aren't getting worn. It's time to switch out your clothes. Pack up and store your summer dresses, sleeveless shirts and shorts. Purge anything you didn't wear this year and donate the items to charity or people who can use it. And put away those white shoes until after Memorial Day.
Pool and Water Toys - The pool is closed for the year. So unpack your pool bag and clean out the crumbs. Store masks and goggles in it and tuck it away. Pool toys toys and equipment gets put into storage in bins so you can enjoy it again when temperatures rise again.
Heating - This isn't exactly organizing, but home maintenance needs to be organized. Use an online system or your task monster manager to remind you of regular routine maintenance such as oil changes, filter changes, and heat and air duct cleaning. Now is the time to check your heating and air system, clean out ducts, and perform any maintenance or repairs that are needed. And don't forget to change batteries in your smoke alarms and flash lights.
Uncover Your Desk - You know it's under there somewhere... and you know the fall papers are starting to rollin. So get ready to take control over those school papers before they take control of your desk!. Set up an "in box" for each child's papers to be processed. Set up a "keep" box or file for each child's art or paperwork that you want to hold onto for long-term keepsakes. Set up your own paper processing center so you can deal with it rather than spreading it out.
