Spring is just around the corner here in Atlanta. The days are getting warmer and you may be reaching for short sleeves on our 70 degree winter days. But there might still be a cold snap. Because of our funky weather pattern (if you don't like the weather just wait 10 minutes) now is a great time to start your closet spring cleaning, Atlanta style.
1. Weed out your spring and winter clothes. If you haven’t worn something in two seasons, you probably won’t ever wear it again. If you’re saving it for some sentimental reason, put it into a keepsake box.
2. Weed brutally: If you don’t love it -- > lose it. You’re not likely to wear something that isn’t a favorite cut or color if you really don’t like it.
3. If something doesn’t fit but you think you may change sizes, take the item off its hanger and put into a bin with the clothing size marked. If you don’t get down to that size in a year, give the items away. The reward for losing weight is getting new clothing!
4. Invest in good sturdy hangers. Get a full set and your closet will look neater all around. Your clothing will also last longer because it won’t be pulled out of shape or scrunched up.
5. Purses can be neatly placed along a shelf, hung from hooks, or be stored in a purse bag that hangs from the closet rod. It’s like a shoe-bag with larger pockets. A sweater bag with shelves that hangs from a rod can also be used to store purses.
I love this eco-fabric accessory bag from The Container Store.
6. Not enough hanging space in your closet? For just $10 you can purchase a rod that hangs down from your hanging rod and immediately doubles your hanging space.
7. To maximize space in your closet, invest in a closet system with shelves, rods, and drawers.
8. Keep shoes from cluttering the floor by using shoe-bags or shoe shelves. Keep special occasion shoes in labeled boxes up high on a shelf.

9. If you store your out of season clothing, there is a trick to making the switch in Atlanta since our weather changes rapidly back and forth from February through April. Put away 80% of your winter clothes. Leave out a couple of items and light jackets. Bring out your spring clothing, but leave your beachwear in storage. You can wear your spring clothing with a light jacket or sweater.
10. Take out all the extra hangers that use up your space. You can store them in the front or back, buy a box to hold them, or make a box like I did in the photo above.
