The Gifford Collegiate begins today. The event will be played on CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, California. The field is small - there are only 14 teams - but the talent is vast. Among the teams that will be competing in the tournament include:

  • #1 Oklahoma State
  • #2 Stanford
  • #11 Augusta State
  • #12 USC
  • #17 UCLA

In the three events it has played this year, Oklahoma State's squad has won twice and finished second once. The Gifford Collegiate marks its final match for its fall campaign. I would be very surprised to see the Cowboys return to Stillwater, Oklahoma without a first place trophy.

If a team is to overthrow the Cowboys, however, Stanford will likely be the one to do it. In its three tournaments this fall, the team has finished in fourth, second, and third. Its squad will be hungry to record a win before the fall portion of its year is complete.

Not to be forgotten, UCLA may also perform admirably, considering the fact that they have home course advantage. The Bruins are hosting the event.

CordeValle, which is located just 30 minutes south of San Jose, California, is a Robert Trent Jones, Jr. design, and has garnered numerous accolades. It was included in Golf Magazine's Top 100 Courses You Can Play, was ranked at number 14 in Golf Digest's America's 50 Best Golf Courses, and was placed in 13th position in Conde Nast Traveler's Top 100 Golf Resorts Worldwide. The course is a par 72, and plays 7,169 yards.
