The McTureous Homestead Museum and Memorial Park are located in Altoona, Florida. Altoona is one of those tiny towns that if you blink driving though you might miss it, and, it was home to Medal of Honor winner Robert McTureous, Jr.
In 1944 McTureous joined the Marines leaving Altoona behind to join the Pacific campaign. On June 7, 1945, Pvt. Robert McTureous gave his life for his country earning him this country’s highest honor.
Part of his Medal of Honor citation reads, “By his fearless initiative and bold tactics, had succeeded in neutralizing the enemy by fire, killing six Japanese troops and effectively disorganizing the remainder of the savagely defending garrison.”
The McTureous Homestead Museum is operated by the Greater Altoona Society, Inc. The McTureous home has been made into a museum dedicated to Robert and his family. Also there are photos and items from the era and Altoona’s past. The Military room displays Many of McTureous’ medals as well as some of his personal items. His Medal of Honor is on exhibit at the Lake County Museum in Tavares, Florida.
Next to the Museum on the same property is the McTureous Memorial Park. There is a large monument honoring the war hero, a walking path, pavilion with tables and grills and a playground for all ages. There are benches and swings under large shade trees inviting someone to sit and relax.
This hometown hero was laid to rest in Glendale Cemetery in Umatilla, Florida. But the stories are that Pvt. Robert McTureous prefers to stay closer to home. Glimpses of a solider standing by the monument , next to his home in Altoona, have been reported. Some say they can feel someone there with them, never in a malicious way. More as if something were curious and interested in what they were doing there.
If you would like to pay Pvt. McTureous a visit the park is open from dawn till dusk. The museum does not have regular hours but is worth watching for when it is open. There is a wonderful array of small town history contained in the little cracker house.
Just reminders for all those spirit hunters, always seek permission to be on any property after hours. And always leave the location as you found it.
