Porsche teamed up with a number of aircraft manufacturers today to bring the Porsche Aircraft Experience to the Glendale airport today. The invitation only event allowed participants to walk through aircraft from manufacturers such as Gulfstream, Piaggo, Embrarer and Cessna, as well as sliding into the driver seat of Porsche on a closed track.
After signing up for the drive slot, I had some time to walk around the tarmac where the airplanes sat open for inspection. The decadence of a private aircraft begins even before you climb aboard here. Indeed, I walked a red carpet to the steps of one plane that was available for hire. Once in the cabin, rich materials of leather and wood adorn the interior much as they do any Porsche. Ah, what a way to travel. No parking issues, lines or TSA pat-downs.
Moving onto the driving experience, we were shuttled to a closed course set up exclusively for the event. Two Boxters, a 911 and a Panamera were on deck for our pleasure. The group each got up to two test drives with a Porsche instructor in the passenger seat. After that, the instructors take the wheel, and show the event participants just what the cars are capable of.
Senses are all peaked as the ears pick up the high revs of the engine, and your back feels the shove of the seat as launch control is engaged. As the instructor pulls G's around the course, it's impossible to keep a straight face. Indeed, I found myself giggling just a bit by the second turn. Opening the door at the end of this hot lap, my sense of smell was invoked with the pleasant scent of burning rubber and brake compounds.
Ah, what a way to play hookie from work on a Thursday. Thanks Porsche!
