If you're new to Wicca/Paganism, you get slammed with a lot of info. And a stigma, but that's for a later article.
When I was new, I thought there were certain things you had to do to be considered a Wiccan or Pagan. There was this Rede that I had to memorize, and these Rules I had to follow...
Lemme tell ya people, the best thing about this religion is your ability to customize. Make your own rules. And follow them. You're not supposed to be like everyone else, so why act like them?
Me, personally, I don't follow the Rede. (Full version located at http://www.wicca.com/celtic/wicca/rede.htm)
I know all it basically says is "Harm None", which I do anyway, but boy-oh-boy is it wordy about it! And all these things about wind directions, and saying spells in rhyme... when I first saw it I did one of those funny faces where my eyes looked like they wanted to bug out. I said to myself, "I gotta do all THAT?"
No, you don't. Like with everything you find on the internet -- take it with a grain of salt. Read its intentions, not the flourishes in what it says. I myself follow a rule of 7, and follow a pantheon of 7, one of which includes Michael, the Highest of the Hierarchy. So, as such, I wore a septagram, which ticked some people off. At the time, I didn't know WHY I liked it, I just did. And I got chewed. By one person (who splashed quite a bit about it on several different social networking sites) but it was still royal enough that it got me thinking.
Why DO people say that you have to follow your religion one way? They can say, "Oh, you can do what you want," but when it comes down to it, sometimes those are the people that try to put restrictions on you. Don't let them bully you, stand your ground. Be as unique as the Goddess made you.
