The city didn't have many supporters when it decided to spend $5 million on high-tech self-cleaning toilets over four years ago. Opponents said it was too costly and wouldn't pan out. They were right about the not-panning out part, as the city pulled the plug on the toilets earlier this year after it was discovered (shockingly!) that the privacy-first toilets were being used more by prostiutes and drug-dealers than actual tiolet-needy people.
Well now the city has an idea on how to get the money back...eBay!!! The toilets are up for bid on the site with the auction closing next week. Initially the city was asking for $89,000, but when no offers hit, the toilets were priced to move. Bids sit at around $1,000 as of today.
The people that run this city can sometimes mystify me with their innability to use common sense. Is the $5,000 they are going to get really worth the mocking publicity of not even being able to sell these things for under four-figures?
If you've got an extra grand lying around, I say buy the thing merely for having some good barbecue fodder. "Did I ever tell you about the time I got a multi-million dollar, self-cleaning toilet for a thousand bucks?"
I wonder what the city will do with the money it raises. I'm guessing it goes to pay the guy who put them up for bid on the site.
