It may be a bit a grim way to wind down the year, but now is the time to look back on the top 5 Seattle crimes of the past year.  Some shocked, some sickened, some were bizarre.  All were infamous.

5.  Amanda Knox - Yea, I know, she was arrested last year, but she was still plenty on the radar in 2008.  The former UW honor-roll student was the feature of 20/20 episodes, had numerous news specials filmed on her and was even finally charged with the murder of her roommate.  The crime she was charged with is a 2007 issue, but it looks like a good bet Amanda Knox could even make this list next year.

4.  Southcenter Mall Shooting - When Barry L. Saunders decided to open fire inside a bust shopping mall, he took the concerns of gang violence that exist in Seattle to a whole nother level.  Sanders may have committed just one of a dozen or so gang-related murders in 2008, but his was the one that hit the headlines the hardest.  Having to look over your shoulder at the mall will never seem crazy again.

3.  Traffic-Circle Murder - In July, a traffic dispute turned deadly when Brian Keith Brown punched James Paroline once in the face, directly leading to the death of Paroline.  The murder sparked racial tensions across the city, specifically in the already-race tense Rainier Beach neighborhood where the murder occurred.  Brown was charged with second-degree murder for the crime, causing many to question whether race and media attention played a part in the trumped-up charges.

2.  Isaac Zamora - The mentally disturbed Zamora went on a shooting rampage in Alger, killing six, including Sheriff's Deputy Anne Jackson.  The case brought to light the trouble with the states mental healthcare system when it was learned that Zamora's family had attempted to have him committed in the past.  The courts have ruled Zamora mentally incompetent to stand trial and ordered him to a mental hospital.

1.  Carnation Child Starvation - In the case that shocked everyone who heard its tale, a young girl was found emaciated in her parents house, the result of two years of extreme abuse that left her looking half her age.  The case got more disturbing when accounts of the rest of her family's normal life began to emerge.  Her sadistic stepmother, who led the abuse, wrote a knitting blog at the same time that she was starving her stepdaughter to the brink of death.  The girl was punished for attempting to drink from the toilet due to her extreme dehydration and was sometimes given only a dixie cup of water per day.  The worst part?  The parents are only facing four years in prison.

That about wraps it up for Seattle Crime in 2008.  Have a safe New Years and avoid anything that will get you on this site.
